Global Accessibility Awareness Day

(fr)

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day.

Through the years, I always tried to take accessibility into consideration by listening and promoting it, but mostly practise it to what I consider a very limited scope.

I deliver semantic markup, think about colour contrast, do not take the user’s power of decision by using target="_blank" on anchors, use touch areas that are bigger, add useful ARIA attributes when I can and I understand what they are doing, fill bug reports of libraries I’m using if I can, get assistance from tools auditing accessibility… These are pretty basic things to do and knowing people in a11y land, I know I could do much better.

So, starting from the ongoing overhaul of this website (software and design), I will take accessibility more seriously, adding an Accessibility Statement which will list more precisely what can be expected on the websites I’m building, starting with this one, re‑re‑re‑read introduction and documents from the WAI and more importantly, practise what I’ve understood.

This is how one learns: practise; I need to up my game to everyone’s benefits.
